The Sleep State

As shown in Figure 14, the ego in this quadrant has neither a “normal” consciousness (consciousness is negative because it is focused within the psyche in this quadrant) nor a “normal” personal unconscious. Here consciousness is focused on that part of the collective unconscious that can never be conscious because it is formless, which we call UC2 in our phase space. There are no psychically-charged images in this state. Recall that the basic equation for CS = X, which holds whenever the ego’s internal energy is equal to the energy of an external experience, can be expressed as

There are no psychic projections in the sleep state so that  Xe ÷ 1 as shown in Figure 28. In addition, the ego’s functions are at rest so that EFUNCTIONS ÷ 0 as shown in Figure 30. The basic equation given above can therefore be reduced to

Because sin2 is negative in this quadrant, this equation can be re-written

where the ratio of the internal psychic mass :i/pi to the external psychic mass :o/po is the psychic mass ratio 0. Figure 37 shows values of 0 for the angles of consciousness in the sleep state. The value of 0 approaches infinity as 2÷0 and it approaches zero as 2÷90.

Figure 37. The Psychic Mass Ratio for the Sleep State.

For “normal” sleep states where tan2~1 and sin2~.7 the value of 0 is close to one and there is, by our definition, a coincidence. As shown in Figure 37, unlike other ego states, 45E is the only angle of consciousness where a coincidence is possible in the sleep state.

In the waking state, for example, a coincidence is possible for all angles of consciousness. For any angle in the waking state we have

which is a very complex equation. For 2=45E, this equation only reduces to

which is still complex. But in the sleep state, there is only one coincidence possible–when  2=45E. Figure 37 shows that as 2 increases from 0E to 45E, the value of 0 decreases from infinity to 1 (the inner is greater than the outer until both are equal).  Here consciousness is focused on itself. Then as 2 further increases from 45E to 90E, 0 decreases from 1 to 0 (the outer is greater than the inner). Here consciousness is focused on UC2 which is the deepest and formless region of the collective unconscious.  This relationship is shown in Figure 38 for the formless sleep state. Although relatively formless, and perhaps chiefly characterized as a state of peace, there is no real psychic projection and there is one and only one point of coincidence--where the inner and outer psychic masses are equal and the sleeping ego is at equilibrium.
